Wellness
SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT AND PERSONAL RESOURCES
The social environment is the culture of an organisation as experienced by its employees.
Culture is created, reinforced and sustained by ongoing patterns of human relationships and communications that are known to have important influence on mental and physical health. These patterns are strongly influenced by managerial decisions about the organisation and design of work as they result in policies and practices implemented and the extent to which basic human needs are routinely addressed.
The employee’s social environment is also effected through interpersonal relationships with supervisors and co-workers. A positive social environment nurtures the ability of people to fully use their talents and resources, and have “fun” at work.
Personal resources refer to the means, by which individuals personally cope with stresses in their environment, and the sense of control they have over their work. The ability to influence events in one’s immediate environment is an important part of what makes a person feel well. Personal resources also include a person’s perception that there is support in his/her life during difficult times.
HEALTH PRACTICES
An environment that promotes healthy practices enables and supports healthy lifestyles, behaviours and coping skills for dealing with life in healthy ways.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
A healthy physical environment addresses the health and safety of the work force. It fosters and supports a safe and healthy workplace with policies, programs and activities that reinforce and provide for good practices.
The coaching process can support should these areas be impacting your wellness.
Business Coaching
Works primarily with entrepreneurs, business owners, and professionals. Business coaches focus on improving the business and personal capacity and growth of their clients so that their actions will generate greater profits for the business, while reducing the clients’ stress and energy requirements to do so. Business coaches assist the business head (owner, entrepreneur, or professional) to understand the business game and themselves much better and get out of their own way to make more informed and more effective choices. Business Coaches become the silent (and secret) partner in supporting and enlightening business owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals to achieve business and personal successes.
Life Coaching
Life coaches focus on assisting anyone who wants to achieve life-improving goals only. For example achieving balance between your work, personal and family lives, or turning your creativity into a positive lifestyle, or discovering and following the path to make a real difference with your life. Life coach has become the most widely recognized specialty title of the personal coaching profession.
Performance Coaching
Achieving excellence through performance is accomplished in two major ways.
The first way is taking a proactive stance by preventing counter-productive methods.
For example, you might implement training proactively within your company before the lack of that particular skill becomes evident and leads to performance issues.
The second way is to correct performance problems that arise within the organisation. This is accomplished by first, identifying the root cause and secondly, implementing a plan of action to correct the problem.
People are our most important asset and the time and resources invested in a performance improvement coaching plan can save your company costs, as you do not have to spend money recruiting and training a new employee.
Knowledge or Skills - The employee does not know how to perform the process correctly - lack of skills, knowledge, or abilities.
Process - The problem is not employee related, but is caused by working conditions, bad processes, poor relationships with peers and managers, absence of key performance indicators (KPI), etc.
Resources - Lack of resources, support or technology.
Motivation or Culture - The employee knows how to perform, but lacks the motivation to get the job done. There is a lack of alignment of culture and the employee is affected by the misalignment of culture performancecoach@coaching-sa.com

In your organisation, your first line of defence will be your HR practitioner/business partner who will know if your company offers coaching. If your company does not, you can ask your manager to pay for a coach that you choose for yourself.
If your company does offer coaching, you will want to be prepared to explain to your manager exactly what you want to accomplish with coaching, and as the coaching progresses, keep your manager informed.
You will want to work with your coach to clarify up front what a good job looks like and how successful coaching will be measured. You don't have to share the gory details with your manager, but the more transparent you make your progress; the more likely you are to be able to keep your coach for as long as you need.
Any good coach will offer you a complimentary conversation. In this conversation, the best thing you can do is share your current situation and ask how he or she might help you.
A good coach will simply coach you and you will walk away with value or you will not. If you do not feel like the time you spend with a coach has added value, do not hire that coach.
For those inclined to due diligence here are some other things to consider:
